Medical Microneedling: What to Expect Before, During and After

Microneedling is the most reliable treatment we have for texture and scarring. Here is how a session goes, how the skin heals, and the aftercare our practitioners actually reach for.

Microneedling has an unglamorous mechanism and a very good track record. A device with fine sterile needles creates thousands of controlled micro-channels in the skin. The body reads them as injury, mobilises growth factors, and lays down new collagen and elastin as it repairs. The skin that grows back is smoother than the skin that was there.

That is why we use it for the concerns that respond poorly to everything else: rough texture, enlarged pores, early etched lines and atrophic acne scarring. It is collagen induction rather than resurfacing, so it improves the structure of the skin rather than taking a layer off it.

Before your session

  • Stop retinoids, exfoliating acids and vitamin C three to five days before, as your practitioner directs. They make the skin more reactive to needling.
  • Skip sun exposure and self-tanner for a week. We do not needle sunburned or freshly tanned skin.
  • Tell us about cold sores. A history of them usually means a short antiviral course beforehand, since needling around the mouth can trigger an outbreak.
  • Come without makeup. The skin is cleansed and, where appropriate, numbed with a topical anaesthetic for twenty to thirty minutes.

During the treatment

The needling itself takes about twenty to thirty minutes for a full face. Depth is adjusted zone by zone: shallower over the forehead and around the eyes, deeper across cheeks and scars. Most patients describe it as a warm, scratchy vibration rather than pain. A calming serum is applied throughout and a cooling mask afterwards.

How the skin heals

  • Day 0 to 1: pink to red, like a moderate sunburn, warm and tight. Sleep on a clean pillowcase.
  • Day 2 to 3: redness fades, skin feels dry and may look slightly rough or bronzed.
  • Day 3 to 5: light flaking. Do not pick or exfoliate it away; let it lift on its own.
  • Week 2 onward: the early glow. Real collagen change shows from six weeks and continues for months.

Aftercare our practitioners actually use

For the first three to five days the routine is deliberately boring. A soothing foaming cleanser that does not strip, a repair serum with antioxidants to support healing, a recovery balm over any dry or tight areas, and a mineral zinc sunscreen every morning. Nothing with fragrance, acids, retinol or vitamin C until you are cleared, and no makeup for at least twenty-four hours.

This is the routine we bundle as the Microneedling Recovery package on the Continued Treatment page, because it is exactly what the treatment room reaches for.

How many sessions

Texture and pores usually respond to a series of three, spaced four to six weeks apart. Scarring is staged over more sessions and a longer timeline, and we will tell you honestly what depth of scar microneedling can and cannot change. Maintenance is typically one or two sessions a year.

Questions we hear

Does microneedling hurt?
With topical numbing most patients find it tolerable, closer to a scratchy vibration than pain. Sensitive areas such as the upper lip and forehead feel it more.
How long is the downtime after microneedling?
Plan on two to three days of visible redness and up to five days of light flaking. Most people return to work the next day with no makeup, or after forty-eight hours with mineral makeup.
When will I see results from microneedling?
A brightness and smoothness within two weeks, then structural change from about six weeks as new collagen forms. A series of three sessions produces the most visible change over three to six months.
Can microneedling be combined with other treatments?
Yes. It is often sequenced with peels, red light therapy and, for pigment, IPL, but the order and spacing come out of your skin assessment rather than a menu.
