Retinol Strength Guide: 0.25% to 1% and How to Move Up Without the Peel
Retinol remains the best-supported topical for collagen, texture and tone. The strengths we stock from SkinCeuticals, Vivier, Alastin and iS Clinical, who starts where, and how to climb the ladder comfortably.

Retinol is vitamin A, and it works by speeding up skin cell turnover and signalling fibroblasts to make collagen. Decades of evidence sit behind it for fine lines, texture, pore size and tone. The reason so many people fail with it is not that it does not work; it is that they started too strong, too often, and gave up during the adjustment.
The ladder we stock
- Alastin Retinol 0.25%: lipid-encapsulated, the gentlest start, suits sensitive skin and first-timers.
- SkinCeuticals Retinol 0.3 and Vivier Retinol 0.3%: the standard starting point, encapsulated for slow release, with soothing botanicals.
- iS Clinical Retinol Emulsion 0.3 and 1.0: a nourishing emulsion base for drier skin.
- Alastin Retinol 0.5%, SkinCeuticals Retinol 0.5 and Vivier Retinol 0.5%: the step-up for skin preconditioned on 0.3.
- Vivier Retinol 1% and SkinCeuticals Retinol 1.0: the top rung, for advanced concerns or the most dramatic result in the least time, on skin that has tolerated 0.5 for months.
Who starts where
Sensitive, reactive or rosacea-prone skin starts at 0.25% or not at all until the barrier is calm. Most people start at 0.3%. Skin that has used retinoids before without trouble can start at 0.5%. Nobody starts at 1%, and most people never need to reach it; a 0.5% used every night for a year does more than a 1% used on and off.
How to climb without the peel
- Weeks one and two: twice a week, pea-sized amount on dry skin, moisturiser over it.
- Add a night every two weeks until you are at every night without dryness.
- Hold there for a month with no flaking before considering the next strength.
- Flaking or stinging means back off a night, not push through. A damaged barrier undoes the benefit.
- Mineral SPF every morning, always. Retinised skin burns more easily.
What to pause it for
Stop three to five days before microneedling, peels, laser or IPL, and restart when your practitioner clears you, usually a week to ten days after. Pause during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Retinol and exfoliating acids on the same night is the most common mistake we see; alternate them.
Questions we hear
- What strength retinol should a beginner use?
- 0.25% to 0.3%, twice a week to start, building to nightly over two months. Encapsulated formulas make this far more comfortable than older retinols.
- Is the retinol purge real?
- Some people see a short increase in breakouts as turnover speeds up, usually within the first month. Flaking and stinging are different: those mean the barrier is struggling and you should slow down.
- Retinol or retinal or tretinoin?
- They are all vitamin A at different steps of conversion. Prescription tretinoin is the strongest and is available through the clinic where appropriate; encapsulated retinol is the right place for most people to build tolerance.
