Why SPF Is the Only Non-Negotiable Step (and Which Mineral Sunscreen to Wear)

Every result we help patients build — brighter tone, softer lines, calmer skin — is defended or undone by the same daily decision. Why mineral, how much, and TiZO, Colorescience and Vivier compared.

Ask any practitioner at the clinic what single product they would keep if they had to give up the rest, and you will get the same unglamorous answer: sunscreen. UV exposure is the largest controllable driver of visible ageing. Lines, laxity and pigment all trace back to it.

It is also the step that protects every other investment you make. A vitamin C serum, an IPL series, a peel: all of them are building tone and collagen that unprotected sun exposure quietly spends back down.

Why mineral

We lean on zinc-based mineral formulas because they are broad-spectrum, photostable and kind to reactive skin. The modern ones wear like skincare, not like the beach. Tinted versions add iron oxides, which matter if pigment is your battle: they block the visible light that mineral filters alone let through, and they double as light coverage.

The dose is where most people fall short

Two finger-lengths for the face and neck, applied as the last step of your morning routine. That is more than most people use, and using half the dose gives far less than half the protection. Reapply if you are actually in the sun for more than a couple of hours, which is where a powder or a spray earns its place.

The three lines we carry, compared

  • TiZO Ultra Zinc SPF 40: the weightless daily base. Non-tinted for everyone, tinted for pigment-prone skin. A primer-sunscreen version sits well under makeup, and a lip SPF 45 covers the one area everyone forgets.
  • Colorescience: the reapplication solution. Brush-On Shield is a mineral powder SPF 50 you can dust over makeup at lunchtime; Flex is a lightweight tinted fluid that adapts to skin tone; All Calm is the green-tinted SPF 50 for rosacea; No-Show is the sheerest option for those who hate the feel of sunscreen.
  • Vivier Sheer SPF: a silky matte SPF 45 with shine control for oilier skin, and a dewy mineral tinted SPF 30 for a glow under or instead of makeup.

The habit is the product

The best SPF is the one that is on your skin at 8am on an overcast Tuesday in November. Find a texture you genuinely like wearing. That preference, multiplied by three hundred mornings a year, outperforms any single clinical ingredient we sell.

Questions we hear

Do I need sunscreen in a BC winter?
Yes. UVA, which drives ageing and pigment, is present year-round and passes through cloud and glass. The dose can be lighter in December than July; the habit should not change.
Is mineral sunscreen better than chemical?
For reactive, rosacea-prone or post-procedure skin, yes: mineral filters sit on the surface and rarely sting. Modern zinc formulas are elegant enough that most of our patients never go back.
How do I reapply sunscreen over makeup?
A mineral powder SPF such as Brush-On Shield, dusted over the face at midday. It is the only powder sunscreen recommended by The Skin Cancer Foundation for active use.
