Botox and Dysport for the First Time: An Honest Guide
Neuromodulators soften the lines you have earned without freezing the face that makes them. How they work, what a first appointment involves, and how our injectors think about restraint.

Expression lines are folds. Every time the frontalis lifts your brows or the corrugators pull them together, the skin above creases along the same path. Decades of that, plus collagen loss, and the crease stays when the muscle relaxes. A neuromodulator interrupts that cycle by blocking the nerve signal to the muscle, so it contracts less and the skin stops being folded.
Botox and Dysport are two brands of the same category. They differ slightly in how they spread and how quickly they start, which is why an injector may prefer one for a particular area. Neither is stronger; the dose is what matters.
What we treat, and how we think about it
- Frown lines between the brows, horizontal forehead lines and crow's feet are the classic three.
- Bunny lines, a downturned mouth, a dimpled chin and jaw clenching are common add-ons.
- Our injectors treat restraint as the skill. The goal is that people notice you look well, not that they notice the treatment.
The first appointment
It begins with a consultation, which at Ageless Living is required before a first treatment. Your injector watches how your face moves, maps the muscles that are actually creating each line, and talks through what a first dose will and will not do. The injections themselves take about ten minutes and feel like small pinches. You can drive, work and go out afterwards.
Avoid rubbing the area, lying flat or hard exercise for the rest of the day, so the product stays where it was placed.
Timeline and longevity
Softening begins around day three and is complete by day ten to fourteen, which is when we book a review to fine-tune anything asymmetric. Results hold for three to four months on average, sometimes longer with repeat treatment as the muscle learns to rest. Regular treatment does not make the muscle dependent; it simply stops being used as hard.
Between appointments
Two products extend the effect at home. A needle-free peptide wrinkle serum works on the same expression lines from the outside, and a glycation defence treatment protects the collagen that makes skin bounce back. Both are in the Injectable and Collagen Support package on the Continued Treatment page.
Questions we hear
- Will Botox make my face look frozen?
- Not when it is dosed conservatively and placed accurately. Our injectors start with a first dose that softens movement rather than stopping it, then adjust at a two-week review.
- How long does Botox or Dysport last?
- Typically three to four months. Some patients find results last longer after several treatments as the muscle becomes used to resting.
- When should I start neuromodulators?
- When lines are beginning to stay at rest is the most useful time, since it prevents them deepening. There is no rule about age; it is about how your face moves and what bothers you.
- Can I have Botox and filler at the same visit?
- Often yes, once you have had your consultation. Your injector will sequence them so each is placed where it works best.
